Late August to mid-April. December–March is peak, with the longest, darkest nights.

The Kp index measures geomagnetic activity. The higher it is, the brighter the aurora and the farther south it reaches. Here's the good news: because Fairbanks is right under the oval, you can often see the lights at just Kp 1–2. Kp 3+ is a strong night; Kp 5+ is a storm.
The single most important factor. A clear sky at Kp 1 beats a cloudy sky at Kp 6 every time. We share the nightly cloud forecast and tell you which direction to drive for clear skies.
You need truly dark skies — that's why the season is roughly late Aug to mid-April. Around the summer solstice it never gets dark enough. Get away from town lights for the faintest displays.
A bright full moon washes out faint aurora (though strong displays still shine). New-moon weeks are best for photography and delicate curtains.
